Teaching Pastors to Teach

August 5, 2006

This Fall, I have the privilege of teaching one of the required classes in the practical department at Concordia Seminary. The course is Pastor as Educator. Similar to the course that I taught for the MTC and LAP while in the parish, Pastor as Educator will be my first opportunity to serve as an instructor. As most of you probably can guess, I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to teach as well as share some of what I have learned about parish education from my experiences over the past 10 years. Hopefully if all goes well, I will have the opportunity to teach on a regular basis. Below is the course description.

P-120 Pastor as Educator

An examination of the role of the pastor as a teacher and administrator or educational programs in Lutheran parishes together with a study of major learning theories and teaching methods as these relate to the practice of education in the church. Provision is made for student teaching experience in local Christian day schools under the supervision of experienced Lutheran teachers.

As of last Friday, I am officially a graduate student at St. Louis University. My first two classes are Qualitative Research and Secondary Supervision. Both classes are required for my Ph.D. program in Curriculum and Instruction. I look forward to the classwork as well as the opportunity to apply what I learn to my day-to-day seminary activities. Any prayers will be appreciated. I will let you know how it goes.

Concordia Seminary iTunes Update

August 4, 2006

After a few months of development, Concordia University’s iTunes U site is almost ready for deployment. Available for Fall quarter, iTunes U will offer course content as well as feature programs like Dr. Meyer’s SemCast, historic lectures, and a little something from your’s truly. I will post the link as soon as it is live, but for now, I have included a photo of the user interface.
